Vivo to release first phone with fingerprint scanner embedded in the display
Smartphone maker, Vivo, officially revealed that they will release the first phone to have a fingerprint scanner built into the display. They showcased this technology during CES 2018 on an unnamed smartphone and mentioned little else about the device.
The device shown in their trailer on YouTube has a bezel-less OLED display and a sleek design. The display is slightly curved on the corners and has two rear cameras. It appears that the device sacrificed a front-facing camera in order to go all-screen in the front. In addition, the smartphone is dust and water-resistant. Specs were not mentioned.
Upon first glance, this Vivo smartphone looks like a cross between a Samsung Galaxy S8 and an iPhone X. It sports a curved display like a Samsung and has those squared apps with rounded corners that are found on iOS. According to the teaser trailer however, the device shown off is "just a prototype and has not entered into production."
Vivo, as well as other smartphone manufacturers Oppo and One Plus, are subsidiaries of a Chinese company called BBK Electronics. The world's first in-display fingerprint scanner was created by their global partner Synaptics, a California based company, who unveiled this technology back in December 2016 as their FS9100 optical fingerprint sensor.
The year of the in-screen fingerprint scanner is here. With that said, Vivo expects to announce their first phone to sport their in-display fingerprint scanner in early 2018. Until then, check out the trailer below!
