The Essential phone

Co-founder of Android, Andy Rubin, has announced his own smartphone called Essential (Essential PH-1). This is a premium handset that sports a beautifully crafted design that aims to evolve with the user instead of becoming outdated. This essentially (see what I did there) means it comes with a modular aspect to it.

The Essential is a gorgeous titanium made smartphone that has an edge-to-edge full display. It also has Corning Gorilla Glass 5 covering the back of the device. This big screened, small phone has a 5.7-inch QHD display with a resolution of 2560 x 1312.

A premium smartphone needs a premium processor and internals. With that said, Essential will come equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 octa-core processor, an Adreno 540 GPU, 4GB of RAM and a whopping 128GB of internal storage.

A dual 13-megapixel camera set up is found on the rear of the Essential. These cameras make up a color and mono dual camera system. There is also a new monochrome camera mode for photographers who are looking to capture true black and white photos.

Keeping the device going throughout the day will be a 3040 mAh battery. The Essential smartphone also supports fast charging technology and will have a USB Type-C charging port. Additionally, there are two pins on the rear of the device next to the camera. This is the modular aspect that will allow users to attach accessories to their phone.

As far as the connector accessories go, Essential revealed a phone dock that charges the phone and connects using a magnetic connector. They also revealed the world's smallest 360 personal camera that also latches onto the back via the pins. This allows users to avoid carrying a bulky, separate camera and enables them to capture events in 360 degrees right from their phone.

The Essential phone comes in four colors: Black Moon, Stellar Grey, Pure White, and Ocean Depths. The device retails at $699 and is unlocked to all carriers. If you reserve it now, you have the option of getting the 360 camera and the phone for $749. It appears the 360 camera will be sold for $199 separately. There is no word yet on the release date of the Essential phone.
