Back in January at CES, ASUS revealed a pretty exciting smartphone. This device, called the ASUS Zenfone AR, would be the second smartphone to have Google's augmented reality feature called Google Tango. It would also be the first phone to come equipped with a whopping 8GB of RAM (6GB of RAM in the US).
The months following the announcement were pretty quiet, to a point where it felt like the phone was forgotten. Then, back in May, news broke that Verizon Wireless would be the exclusive carrier for the handset, although, no news of a specific release date. All we knew was that the device would be released sometime in the summer.
Just recently, our Instagram account leaked out a photo of an official ASUS Zenfone AR View Flip Cover case which could indicate the release of the device is imminent. Typically, when cases arrive, a device is usually launched within two weeks.
With that being said, the ASUS Zenfone AR could be released the first week of August, specifically August 3rd. With the Moto Z2 Force release date being August 10th, it would make sense for Big Red to release the Zenfone AR a week before to avoid release dates coinciding with each other and potentially taking away sales from one another.
We will find out if this is true within the next few days. Stay tuned.
UPDATE: Confirmed with a source close to ASUS. The ASUS Zenfone AR will be released on August 3rd in the US and be exclusively sold by Verizon Wireless.
UPDATE 8/2/17: The handset will be $27/month on device payment or $648 full retail.
