Why a $1000 iPhone is bad for everyone

About a week ago, Apple showed the world their latest iteration of iPhone(s) and Apple Watch. At their keynote event in the new Apple Park, they introduced the Apple Watch Series 3 with LTE, iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and the iPhone X (10).

The biggest eye-popper wasn't new features (because most have been on Android for years), or the devices themselves, but was the unveiling of a $1,000 smartphone (iPhone X). This was certainly eye-opening, just not in a good way. A $1,000 iPhone is bad for everyone.

Why do you think Samsung's new Galaxy Note 8 is almost $1,000? With Samsung making the displays for Apple's new phones combined with price tag leaks, Samsung had to know that Apple would be releasing a phone that would cost consumers $1,000. Because of this, Samsung made the Note 8 the most expensive smartphone they've ever released with a retail price tag of $930.

If you still don't get where I'm going with this, it's simple. Other OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) will see people paying $1,000 or more for a smartphone and this will encourage them to jack up the prices on their respective flagship phones.

Not convinced? Look at the latest reports on the cost of the upcoming Pixel 2 XL. The 128GB version will reportedly cost $950, up $100 from last year's model. After taxes, that device is over $1,000. At this rate, the iPhone X will succeed in making $1,000 the standard price point for high-end smartphones.

At the end of the day, it's a smartphone. No smartphone should be as expensive as some high-end laptops. Remember, smartphones typically don't last as long as laptops. To make matters worse, that $1,000 retail price is for only a 64GB model. Apple also has a 256GB iPhone X that retails at $1,150! Yikes!

Because of this $1,000 base model iPhone X, other high-end devices will get more expensive and this will affect consumers where it matters the most: their wallet. The only way to combat this is to refuse to buy a phone that expensive, but that's definitely not happening. Now we all have to pay more if we want the best smartphones.
