Pixel 2 XL displays are receiving bad reviews, but is it warranted?

The display on the Pixel 2 XL is receiving some heat around the net, but is it deserving? The short answer: yes. With the outrageous price point (my main con), one would expect the device to sport a world class display, but it appears Google may have dropped the ball here.

Personally, I don't mind the display. It's not as vibrant and saturated as the displays found on Samsung handsets. This is shocking considering that LG made the handset for Google and the displays found on LG devices have been top notch.

Google has heard some of the complaints regarding the screen and made a statement to 9to5Google:

"We designed the Pixel 2 to take advantage of multiple facets of the innovative new POLED technology, including QHD+ resolution with 538 pixels per inch as well as a wide color gamut. One of our design intents was to achieve a more natural and accurate rendition of colors. We know that some people prefer more vivid colors, so we’ve added an option to boost colors by 10% for more saturation. We’ll continue to pay close attention to people’s responses to Pixel, and we will consider adding more display color options through software if that makes the product better."

According to Google, they tried to make the colors appear more natural and accurate, as opposed to making it more vivid. So why the negative reviews? Well, the display gives off somewhat of a blue tint and has been suffering from screen burn-in. Screen burn-in is basically seeing a common part of your display (like the on-screen navigation buttons) on any screen when it's not even up.

For example, when putting on Pokemon Go, you still see where the navigation buttons would be on an all white load up screen. Screen burn-in usually happens down the road, not this early on new devices. Google is currently investigating this issue and hopefully they can correct it. For a phone carrying a price tag north of $850, there certainly shouldn't be any issues with the display, but here we are.
