Google gives Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL a 2-year warranty

It has been a little over a week since the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL released and recently Google has been bombarded with complaints regarding the screen on the larger Pixel model. Over the last few days, Google has been investigating these issues and have come to a resolution.

According to Mario Queiroz, VP of Product Management for Google, they are "very confident that the Pixel 2 delivers an exceptional smartphone experience." With that said, after hearing the complaints from various users, Google has decided to give both Pixel models a 2-year warranty worldwide. Two big thumbs up for this.

On top of the 2-year warranty, Google will be pushing out a software update in the next few weeks that will add a new mode to bring more saturated colors to the display. With the software update, Google aims to satisfy those who want a more vivid display.

Mr. Queiroz also went on to address that Google puts all of their products through "extensive quality assurance before launch," and that they investigated the burn-in (differential aging) screen issue. According to their investigation, the screen burn-in is "in line with that of other premium smartphones and should not affect the normal, day-to-day user experience of the Pixel 2 XL."

Despite basically saying that there is no out of the ordinary burn-in issue, Google said that they use "software to safeguard the user experience and maximize the life of the OLED display," and that they will "make ongoing software updates to optimize further."

Regarding the blue tint, Seang Chau, VP of Engineering, also gave an update. In short, Mr. Chau said the blue tint is by design. He discussed the technology in detail and said "the slight blue tint is inherent in the display hardware and only visible when you hold the screen at a sharp angle. All displays are susceptible to some level of color shift (e.g. red, yellow, blue) when viewing from off angles due to the pixel cavity design. Similar to our choice with a cooler white point, we went with what users tend to prefer and chose a design that shifts blue."

Personally have to disagree with Mr. Chau here. I have seen the blue tint on a not so sharp angle, however, it is not a deal breaker for me. Also, I am pretty certain that people prefer not to see blue. Hopefully, this is something that they can also address via a software update in the future. Regardless, kudos to Google for listening and taking some action.
