The final month in a calendar year is always a fun time because rumors and leaks start to build up on the first phones of the new year. With that said, the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ have been at the forefront of those rumors. Just recently, 91mobiles and MySmartPrice (courtesy of the very reputable @Onleaks) revealed renders of the upcoming flagships.
From first look, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ seem to be a very marginal upgrade from this year's Galaxy S8/S8+. As far as design goes, the only truly noticeable difference is the camera and the new fingerprint sensor placement. It appears Samsung heard their critics and have centered the fingerprint sensor and placed it below the camera lens, but critics may still remain.
Despite the welcomed new placement of the fingerprint sensor, Samsung pulled a very Apple-like move and gave one model an exclusive feature. According to the renders, the Galaxy S9 will only have a single camera, while the larger S9+ will have a dual camera configuration. In my opinion and I'm sure I'm not alone on this, both models should have the same features. After all, isn't the main point of two different sized phones to give people an option to what fits best in their hand and pocket? Samsung loses points here.
Moving on, the Galaxy S9 will share many of the same physical attributes as the S8, such as a water-resistant design, a headphone jack (Bravo), and a curved bezel-less display. It will, however, boast improved specs such as a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, potentially 6GB of RAM, and maybe an improved camera.
As previously mentioned, the Galaxy S9+ will have a dual camera configuration similar to the Note8, however, it will have a vertical and centered placement. It will also have a 6.1-inch curved display (0.1-inch smaller than S8+), a headphone jack (Bravo again), and will be water-resistant.
The Galaxy S9 dimensions are likely to be 147.6 x 68.7 x 8.4mm and the Galaxy S9+ dimensions are rumored to be 157.7 x 73.8 x 8.5 mm. Both devices are expected to have a micro SD slot for expandable memory and a dedicated Bixby button.
Some outlets anticipated that Samsung will announce these devices during CES, but that literally never happens. They have always announced their latest addition to the 'S' series around MWC, which is held in February. So it comes as no surprise that my buddies over at SamMobile confirmed the announcement date to be February 26th. Expect the devices to be released sometime in March. Til then, let the rumors continue to fly!
