February 26, 2018

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are finally official. After months of speculation, rumors, and leaks, the Korean tech giant has taken the wraps off of their highly anticipated smartphones at their Unpacked event in Barcelona. Now that everything is official, let's dive in and see what these new phones have to offer.

DISPLAY, DIMENSIONS AND PROCESSOR

Galaxy S9 - Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy S9 will sport a Quad HD+ Super AMOLED 5.8-inch infinity display with a whopping 571 ppi (pixels per inch) and a 18.5:9 ratio. The dimensions are as follows: 147.7mm x 68.7mm x 8.5mm and weighs only 163g.

Galaxy S9+ - The larger variant will come equipped with a Quad HD+ Super AMOLED 6.2-inch infinity display with 529 ppi (pixels per inch) and a screen ratio of 18.5:9. Being a bigger phone, the device has dimensions of 158.1mm x 73.8mm x 8.5mm and weighs in at 189g.

Both handsets will have matching 10nm, 64-bit, Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Octa-core processors (2.8 GHz Quad + 1.7 GHz Quad) and come with Android 8.0 Oreo pre-installed. The Galaxy S9 will also have 4GB of RAM, while the Galaxy S9+ will have 6GB of RAM. In addition, both handsets will include 64GB of internal storage with ability to expand up to 400GB via micro SD.

BATTERY AND CAMERA

Galaxy S9 - Just like its predecessor (Galaxy S8), the device will have a 3000 mAh battery and support fast wireless charging. On the rear, you'll find a Super Speed Dual Pixel 12-megapixel camera with OIS (optical image stabilization) and a dual aperture (f/1.5, f/2.4) that automatically adapts to the environment (kind of like a human eye). There is also an 8-megapixel selfie cam with a f/1.7 aperture.

Galaxy S9+ - Also like its predecessor (Galaxy S8+), a 3500 mAh battery will fuel the smartphone and will also support fast wireless charging. Unfortunately, Samsung decided to take an Apple approach and give the larger model some added features. That being said, you will find a dual-camera configuration with a Super Speed Dual Pixel 12-megapixel sensor and dual aperture (f/1.5, f/2.4) that also have dual OIS and wide angle capabilities. The secondary sensor is a 12-megapixel telephoto lens (for portrait shots) that has a f/2.4 aperture. In addition, there is also an 8-megapixel front-facing snapper with a f/1.7 aperture.

OTHER FEATURES

Intelligent Scan - Biometric phone unlock option that combines facial recognition and an iris scan.

Dual Aperture - Adapts to bright light and super low light automatically. You can also toggle the aperture to create a mood. F/1.5 aperture activates to pull in more light when you're in a dark environment. In daylight, the aperture shifts to f/2.4 to help you capture a crisp photo.

Super Slow-Mo - Record video at an insane 960 fps (frames per second). You can even use a slow-mo video on your lock screen. In addition, you can play back the slow-mo video in a forward loop, reverse loop, or in a swing state.
