Huawei, the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world, made headlines today. The Chinese company today announced the Huawei P20 Pro, which is the first smartphone to sport triple rear cameras. Not only that, the smartphone looks very impressive on paper.
DISPLAY, DIMENSIONS AND PROCESSOR
Let's begin with the display. The Huawei P20 Pro sports a 6.1-inch OLED FHD display with a resolution of 2240 x 1080 and has 408 ppi (pixels-per-inch). Unfortunately, it sports the v̶e̶r̶y̶ ̶p̶o̶p̶u̶l̶a̶r̶ notch on top of the display which is similar to what Apple put atop of their iPhone X. The point of the notch is give more screen real estate, but what's odd about this design is that the P20 Pro also has a bottom bezel that features a physical home button. Kind of defeats the purpose.
As far as the dimensions go, the P20 Pro is 155m in height, 73.9mm in width, 7.8 in depth, and weighs in at about 180 g. Under the hood, there's a Huawei Kirin 970 CPU with an octa-core + micro core i7 processor (4 x Cortex A73 2.36 GHz + 4 x Cortex A53 1.8 GHz), 6GB of RAM, and comes with Android 8.1 Oreo installed. In addition, it will have 128GB of on-board storage, but will have no option to expand via micro SD card.
BATTERY AND CAMERA
Battery life should not be an issue with the P20 Pro. It houses a massive 4000 mAh battery that supports Huawei SuperCharge that can charge up the battery quickly and efficiently. The handset does not support wireless charging.
Now on to the fun part -- the camera. The P20 Pro has not one, not two, but three rear cameras. It features the world's first Leica Triple Camera. The Tri-lens camera consists of a ridiculous 40-megapixel RGB shooter with a f/1.8 aperture, a 20-megapixel Monochrome snapper with a f/1.6 aperture, and an 8-megapixel Telephoto lens with a f/2.4 aperture. Despite all of that on the rear, it also has a single-lens 24-megapixel front-facing camera that has a f/2.0 aperture.
The 40-megapixel camera has a focus on bringing high quality sharpness, superior colour accuracy, focus and contrast with every picture taken. The handset has a Leica zoom lens system that brings 5X Hybrid Zoom, which allows you capture detailed photos from a distance. In addition, the P20 Pro has the highest rated smartphone camera in existence. Receiving an incredible DxOMark score of 109!
4D Predictive Focus - This camera mode pre-focuses on a moving object. This produces sharp action shots without blur. Best part: the moving object does not have to slow down.
Ultra Snapshot - Double-press the volume down control to quickly capture photos. In a locked-screen state, it takes photos in a lightning fast 0.3 seconds.
AI Image Stabilization - Can capture blur-free photos in low-lit environments.
960 fps Super Slow Motion - Similar to what Samsung has on their Galaxy S9 smartphones, the P20 Pro has the ability to record Super Slow Motion videos in a ridiculous 960 fps (frames per second) in 720p quality.
3D Portrait Lighting - Similar to the iPhone X, the handset can capture superb portraits with
studio-quality lighting effects.
Master AI - This feature allows the camera to identify categories which automatically adjusts lighting and other settings to make the picture perfect. The categories are: cat, food, group, natural colours, close-up, night shot, text, greenery, portrait, dog, fireworks, blue sky, flowers, stage, document, sunset, snow, waterfall, and beach.
ARCore support - The P20 Pro is an ARCore supported device which brings the user augmented reality.
Hi-res Wireless Audio - HWA brings outstanding Bluetooth audio quality.
Water-resistant - IP67 rating for dust, splash, and water-resistant. Sadly, Huawei also used this for their reason to omit the headphone jack.
PRICE AND RELEASE DATE
The Huawei P20 Pro is expected to be released in multiple regions on April 5th and carry a price tag of €899. Unfortunately, the device is not coming to the United States. Additionally, you can choose between four different color options: Black, Midnight Blue, Pink Gold, and a new and interesting color called Twilight.
