Despite a decent portion of their mobile work force now working for Google, HTC is still producing their own branded smartphones. A few days ago, the company unveiled their sparkling new flagship smartphone - the HTC U12+. This device is truly unique and is easily HTC's best smartphone yet.
DIMENSIONS, DISPLAY, PROCESSOR
The HTC U12+ has a simply gorgeous design. Thankfully, they completely avoided the dreaded notch and gave the handset a thin top and bottom bezel with an ultra slim border. It has dimensions of 156.6mm x 73.9mm x 8.7mm and weighs 188g.
A 6-inch Super LCD 6 Quad HD+ (2880 x 1440 resolution) display graces the front with an 18:9 aspect ratio and 537 ppi (pixels-per-inch). The handset has a mirror glass coating that HTC calls Liquid Surface and it is gorgeous. In addition, the company introduced a new Translucent Blue variant that allows you to see some of the handset's internals.
Being a 2018 flagship, the device of course comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 64-bit octa-core processor with a clock speed of 2.8 GHz. Additionally, the HTC U12+ comes with 64GB or 128GB of internal storage (with the option to expand externally via micro SD up to 2TB), 6GB of RAM, and comes pre-loaded with Android 8.0 Oreo with HTC Sense. HTC has confirmed that the device will be able to be upgraded to Android P.
BATTERY AND CAMERA
According to HTC, you can expect up to 23.8 hours of talk time on a 3G/4G network thanks to the large 3500 mAh battery found on the U12+. There is also Power saving mode and Extreme power saving mode to extend the life of the battery when you need it the most. The handset supports Quick Charge 3.0 which gives you up to 50% of juice in 35 minutes of charging.
As far as the camera goes, this is HTC's bread and butter. The Huawei P20 Pro and it's triple rear camera system is the highest rated in the industry, but according to DXoMark, the HTC U12+ has the highest rated dual-camera set up on the market. This makes HTC's new flagship device the second highest rated smartphone camera overall.
The HTC U12+ has not one, not two, not three, but four cameras. That's right, you read that correctly. It sports a horizontal dual-camera configuration on the rear and has dual-cameras on the front. On the rear, there's a 12-megapixel main wide-angle camera with an f/1.75 aperture and a secondary 16-megapixel telephoto snapper to create wonderful bokeh effects (think portrait shots). The secondary camera has a f/2.6 aperture. The rear dual-cameras have OIS (optical image stabilization) and EIS (electronic image stabilization) and support up to 2x optical zoom.
On to the front, there's a dual 8-megapixel snapper with a f/2.0 aperture. It has an 84 degree field of view thanks to the wide angel lens and has a Bokeh mode for your selfies. In addition, there is a selfie panorama mode which should absolutely entice the selfie enthusiasts out there.
Edge Sense 2 - This feature gives you freedom to use either hand and apparently knows which hand you're using. It is more much than just squeezing your phone. Now, you can squeeze and hold to keep your screen from auto-rotating, double tap on either side to give yourself a mini screen to access all of your screen with one hand, or the classic squeeze to launch voice assistants, take photos and interact with apps. For example, if you're in Google Maps, you can zoom in on a location by just squeezing the handset.
AR Stickers - With this feature, you can add cool or funny effects to your photos and videos.
Sonic Zoom - This is an interesting feature that allows you to zoom in on a particular sound or voice in a scene.
Auto Zoom - Let's you zoom in smoothly like a professional with a DSLR.
Voice Assistants - You can choose to use either the Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa.
Face Unlock - As simple as it sounds. Take a glance at your phone and watch it unlock.
Water-resistant - With an IP68 rating, the phone is protected from water and dust.
Fingerprint scanner - Rear fingerprint scanner for quick, natural unlocking.
