The Vivo NEX brings industry firsts to a smartphone; ridiculous screen-to-body ratio and pop up came
Earlier today, smartphone maker Vivo introduced their new groundbreaking smartphone called the Vivo NEX. With their latest handset, the company is bringing a few industry firsts that other OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) need to take some notes on. The smartphone industry has been obsessed with creating more screen real-estate for consumers by forcing a notch design, but Vivo has done it the best by going almost completely bezel-free (it has a thin chin at bottom) while avoiding the notch with the NEX.
DIMENSIONS, DISPLAY, PROCESSOR
The Vivo NEX is easily the best designed smartphone in existence at the moment. It has dimensions of 162 x 77 x 7.98mm and weighs in at 199g. Vivo gave their new handset a ridiculous, industry-leading 91.24% screen-to-body ratio. Sporting a 6.59-inch Super AMOLED Ultra FullView Full HD+ (2316 x 1080 resolution) display with 338 ppi (pixels-per-inch), the Vivo NEX becomes the first smartphone on the market to be notch-free and attain a screen-to-body ratio greater than 85%. Lastly, it has a 19.3:9 aspect ratio.
Think a phone like this would boast an average chipset? Think again. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Octa-core processor is under the hood combined with 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal memory. In addition, it packs an Adreno 630 GPU and comes pre-loaded with Android 8.1 Oreo underneath Vivo’s FunTouch 4.0 UI (user interface).
BATTERY AND CAMERA
Top-tier specs continue into this category. Fueling the device is a large 4,000 mAh battery that supports fast charging. Unfortunately, it does not support wireless charging which is a disappointment considering how futuristic this phone looks.
On the rear of the handset, is a dual-camera configuration that houses a main 12-megapixel snapper with a f/1.8 aperture and a 5-megapixel depth-sensing camera with a f/2.4 aperture. Despite having all display in the front, Vivo did not ax the front-facing camera. Instead, they incorporated an 8-megapixel snapper with a f/2.0 aperture into an industry first elevating mechanism that pops out of the device. Vivo said that the camera can be elevated and retracted up to 50,000 times and has been gone through reliability tests.
Elevating Front-Facing Camera - (As stated above) In order to achieve such a high screen-to-body ratio, Vivo packed in an elevating mechanism that pops out the camera when wanting to take a selfie.
In-Display Fingerprint Scanner - This isn't the first time Vivo dived into this technology. The Vivo NEX will sport an in-display fingerprint scanner where users can unlock their device simply by placing their finger on the screen.
Screen SoundCasting - Basically, Vivo turned their screen into a speaker with this tech. In addition, it enhances sound quality with more powerful bass, and softer, smoother treble.
Jovi - Vivo's voice assistant. Users will be able to access apps and features with their voice. The voice assistant can also identify objects on the phone’s screen and provide relevant, accurate information for the user.
Glass Design - The handset has a glass back that features a pattern beneath the glass which creates a rainbow effect.
Headphone Jack - It's sad this is listed as a feature as it's becoming a rarity to find on phones these days, but the fan-favorite headphone jack can be found on the NEX.
Unfortunately, the Vivo Nex will only be available in China, but there is a possibility that it will appear in other markets in the future. It carries a price tag of $702 (4498 yuan) for the 128GB variant and is priced at $780 (4998 yuan) for the 256GB version. Pre-orders begin tomorrow and the device will be released on June 23rd in two color variants: black and red.
Something that is worth mentioning because it could be a deal breaker for some: the Vivo NEX is not water-resistant, does not support wireless charging or NFC, and it should have ample bloatware on it. Regardless, for a first generation phone, the NEX seems to be a stellar smartphone that other OEMs should take note of.
