Google Pixel's Night Sight feature is outstanding (comparison)

December 5, 2018

Despite having switched to a OnePlus 6T as my daily driver, I hang on to my beloved Google Pixel 2 XL as my secondary smartphone. I hang on to it strictly because of the camera (sorry OnePlus, you just can't compete with the Pixel camera). A few weeks ago Google pushed out a new camera feature to all Pixel smartphones. This feature is called Night Sight and it allows users to capture vibrant and detailed low-light photos without a flash.

You might be thinking that it's a gimmick, but it's certainly not the case. The feature is simply outstanding. I've compared standard pictures to pictures using Night Sight and the results speak for themselves. Night Sight is a game-changing smartphone camera feature that other manufacturers need to take note of. To be fair, the OnePlus 6T has a similar feature called Nightscape, but the quality doesn't match up and it takes awhile for it to be processed.

Below is the comparison between 'Standard' photos (left) and photos taken using the Night Sight feature (right). All images were captured using a Google Pixel 2 XL, which is still pretty solid in low-light without Night Sight.

The above photos of Christmas stockings were taken in a dimly lit room, but it doesn't appear that way with when taken with the Night Sight feature.

My beloved cat Nikki. Again, photo was snapped in the same dimly lit room as the stockings. Night Sight really makes my cat's cuteness stand out.

Shot in the same room as the photo's above. The Christmas tree lights pops out more using the Night Sight feature (right).

Beautiful holiday decorations. The Night Sight feature brightens the sky and make the lights pop.

Night Sight feature brightens the sky and makes the lights stand out. However, in this particular image, Night Sight actually changes the color of the up-lighting in the water. Regardless, it does make for a more striking image.

What do you think of Google's new Night Sight feature?
